Under The Christmas Tree

on Dec 29 by

Now that Christmas is over, I can confess that I took my own advice and bought my wife a nice piece of sculpted wood for Christmas. Whenever we have an opportunity, which is usually about once a year or so, we like to buy something created by a local artist. This time, I was in a local shop that carried a wide variety of items that cater to women’s tastes, some of it made by independent artists. Shops like this can be found all over the country and they are easy to find if you just steer clear of the big box stores.

Inside the store, there were plenty of creatively designed place settings and kitchen utensils, soaps, accessories, candles as well as clothing my wife would like. At first, I thought I’d buy my wife these cute spreading knifes with handles designed to look like fruits and vegetables but I eventually thought it was a little too functional. They had interesting drink glasses and some gardening things, but it was a lovely carving of a dragonfly resting on a cattail that I liked best.

The piece is made up of four woods. The artist used zebrawood for the wings of the dragonfly and a deep red bloodwood for the body. The cattails are a combination of cherry, maple and canarywood. The woods are nicely edged and adhered and the entire piece is coated with a sealer and an acrylic.

The piece really captures my wife’s love of nature as it displays what she finds beautiful using some of the same natural materials available in that world she loves.
I hope you had a wonderful holiday and I hope you have a splendid 2012.
