Realism Art

Art is a visual explanation of who we are, what we want, where we are and what we believe. While modern art and the styles that followed expanded those thoughts, we still create along those ideas. From the birth of Western art in the late Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century, the realistic portrayal of these ideas defined art and although modern art expanded the tools and styles used, realistic painting still makes important contributions to the dialogue of art.
In the past century and a half, modern art as attempted to redefine the purpose and the style of art. By the 1960’s, art critics spoke of painting as being dead. But fifty years later, realistic and semi realistic art comfortably exists within contemporary art.
At first, art was used to glorify what we believed as the Christian Church was one of it’s greatest sponsors, but the styles and genres expanded as private wealth sought it’s own glorification through portraiture, genre, figurative, landscape and historical painting. While some of these genres have become curiosities of time, other ways of exploring our selves have added to the styles of realistic painting.

Waves of artistic development color the history of art from the shadowy craftsmanship of Baroque to the sketchiness of Impressionism. A few movements have altered the direction of art and it’s original realistic views of life.
