A NEGLECTED GARDEN IN FALL, canvas size: 24” x 40”

The focal center of this cityscape, or suburbanscape, is a stand-alone garage.  Surrounding it is lots of arboreal foliage, as well as a garden, turning in the fall.  The trees behind it and to the left and right of it are turning yellow, brown and purple.  The drive and apron spill out to the street that is in the foreground and, to the right, an alley passes by the garage.  The alley is bordered on the far right with a rock wall and a cedar hedge.  Along side the garage apron is a garage, now going to seed in the fall.

To succeed as a plein air painter requires a certain about of organization.  If you want to paint outdoors more often than “whenever you feel like it”, you need to carry your tools and your supplies and you need to know where you want to paint.  When Monet said that he became a “hunter of landscapes”, this is what he was implying.  Not every scene is interesting and you need to know how to separate the artistic wheat from the shaft.  At the same time, almost any scene can work as a painting if you care enough about it and can bring enough style to it to rise above it’s commonplace interest.

Not too long after I started to paint landscapes, I wanted to understand how an artist could work on at this field in a productive manner so I took a few days off from work and scouted out ideas for places that I’d paint.   I picked three places and attempted to follow a schedule to see how this would work.  The first painting was of a railroad crossing near my house but after one day, I decided that the painting was not succeeding and never finished it.  The mid morning painting was of a field of black eyed Susans and it sold very quickly.  This painting is the only one I have left from this first attempt at mass plein air painting.

This location is across from my daughter’s grade school.  The house had a lovely garden but had sold that year.  The new owners found themselves with a baby and a lot of work time on their hands.  The garden became neglected although it was still new enough that the lovely stalks and bushes were still flowering.  Because of it’s location, the garage became the first thing I painted.  I did not have much skill yet at archetecural painting so I took my time and patiently painted the door and building.  The alley, the rock wall and the cedars followed.

After my few days off, I started working on the painting after work, filling in most of the trees and the garden. The street was last.  With plenty of good weather, this large painting was finished quickly.  I was just starting to work loose so there is still a lot of detail in this painting, especially the leaves that are scattered everywhere.
