FALL TURNING, canvas size: 18" x 36"

Fall Turning shows a line of trees in a park, changing color in the fall. The trees on the left are in a further state of leaf drop than the ones to the right. Under them is a scattered carpet of fallen leaves, now turned to brown. Behind them, barely visible, is a row of trees and shrubbery, all of them still green. That line of trees is the park edge. The sky is a vivid blue and the park lawn is still an intense green.

Fall is a mad rush to finish any paintings that can be finished but by October, as the light is fading and the leaves are turning, what hasn’t been finished will have to wait another year. In October, a window of opportunity opens for a short time. In that time, I try to paint any interesting leaf turning landscapes I can find.

On this day, I took a half-day off of work and drove to an inner city park. I had painted a few small paintings earlier that year in the local parks and I wanted to see if I could find a bigger one for the fall. My kids used to play at this park when they were young and I knew of the line of trees but they were just beautiful on that October day. I spent all morning painting as much of the line of trees as I could and returned on Saturday to finish the line. But then, the painting sat. A bout of bad weather had arrived and I had to sit on the painting for another year before it was finished.

There is a lot in this painting I like. A glorious fall day is a wonderful thing to experience although by this time of year, I look forward to cleaning out the van, cleaning up my brushes and getting my equipment in shape for the next year. I do a little winter painting but executing a winter painting depends upon what the weather will be like and what obligations I am under. The window of light at that time of year is short.

I love the color of the trees in this painting. I have a few winter and cloudy day paintings that seem a little subtle but the yellow and gold of fall set against a brilliant blue sky is about as bold as Midwestern nature gets. I also enjoy how the color is set against the shadows in the trees.

This is probably one of my loosest paintings and I really like that. At one time, looseness was a good quality in landscape painting but, these days, I find people more interested in a tighter form of artistic landscape painting. Both styles can be done very well and both styles can be abused to bad effect. Personally, I prefer to stay somewhere in between but I do find a lot of enjoyment in a loose style like this.
