THE CITY IN WINTER, canvas size: 24 x 36
This winter cityscape shows an older city neighborhood with a lot of snow. A street runs into the distance with a few cars parked along the snow banks. To the right, a large brown building, trimmed in red stands. Beyond it, to the horizon sit other old, two-story houses. The sky is cloudy and the bare trees of winter stand against it. Within the piles of snow are garbage carts, waiting to be emptied.
Many of my street paintings are painted from the back of my minivan. I park along the road somewhere, open the hatch and prop up my easel. With good boots and gloves, the winter can be handled if you can find the time and the weather does not get too cold. The mid 20’s can be pretty tolerable for painting if you are bundled and the wind isn’t blowing hard.
If most summer days are sunny most of the winter days are cloudy. For a successful sunny winter painting, you’ll need a lot of patience and a few years to work on it. A cloudy winter day, on the other hand, can be much more easily executed. In this case, I wanted to capture the weary look of a city neighborhood as it lives with a large fall of snow. I did not want anything pretty. I wanted the slush and dirty ice, as well as the soot stained snow piles that line our more snow susceptible cities.
This is not a pretty neighborhood. It is old but it is still the neighborhood of people who live their lives in these old houses and fix them up to a certain extent. The cars line the road into the distance where the blur of houses, snow and bare trees meet. It has been a few weeks since it snowed, as the snow piles are sludgy and sooty. So much of it had formed into ice, hard ice on the snow piles and black, dirty ice on the roads. It is also garbage day and the city garbage carts line the road, tipped, propped and bolstered by the piles of snow that stand everywhere, waiting to melt. Although I’m in the city, it looks quiet and peaceful.

The City in Winter
I didn't think I'd like a modern version of a cityscape unless it was tall buildings in a downtown setting, but a modern version of an old neighborhood looks very nice and I think it will hold up in the future.
