CHURCH ON A HILL, a landscape painting for sale by the Fine Art Gallery of Realism

CHURCH ON A HILL, oil on canvas, size: 18" x 30"

A church sits on the top of a hill, over looking the artistic landscape. A series of rolling hills spread out, all of them covered with trees turning colors in the autumn. In the foreground, smaller trees and taller bushes are becoming bare as the autumn light is falling onto the fallen leaves and yellowing grasses. This is a masterpiece of landscape art composed of oil on canvas that blends unique earth tones into a wonderful realistic fall landscape painting of a cathedral atop rolling hills and a deep autumn gorge.

Most of my paintings result from spying some image in some natural landscape or having my attention grabbed by some contrasting light within my artistic vision. But in this case, the painting was the result of an art competition. Specifically, the contest involved paintings of America’s national parks. This was an idea I found attractive although it had real problems from my point of view. In particular, most of the more spectacular vistas in America are quite far from where I live, as are most of the major parks. Views and vistas are much more intimate and not as easily found in the Midwest. They are fleeting glimpses of sunlight falling across rolling hills or the way wind blows across a small grove of trees. Most of the artists who enter this show paint from photographs, snapping their fleeting glimpses of buffalo and spectacular sunsets on ancient rocks before returning home and duplicating it in their studio.

Instead, I attempted a plein air sketch. Sadly, there are no major parks anywhere near where I live so I was left with a hiking trail recognized by the park system. The trail rambles across a good part of the state but is mostly secluded in woods. Instead, I took a half day from work and drove along as much of the trail as I could find. After a lot of driving, I found a bend in the trail that led into a park and exposed a lovely view of a local church.

At first, I attempted to paint this view in the spring, which, unfortunately, left me with a rather drab painting. I decide to recolor the painting in the fall. The shadows would fall a little more sharply and the golds and oranges would be more dramatic than the sea of light green that had been on the painting.

Church On a Hill, a realism landscape artwork

Jan 01, 2012 by Joe

I have always loved this beautiful landscape painting. The painting style reminds me of a combination of Van Gough & the Hudson River School. It is currently hanging in my living room where the red, pink, & purple hues from the sunset alter the time of day the painting is set it. This is truly a masterpiece.

Although I’m not a religious person, this painting kind of tells a story of a church, that symbolizes a God, over looking a landscape where the trees appear to be looking to the church for guidance and protection through the coming winter. The trees appear to be on fire and some are losing their leaves becoming naked and vulnerable. The houses in the distance serve as a buffer and the church is there to reassure them that everything will be fine.
